NEW GAME ROOM ON FIRST FLOOR FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT!

Stay at the Walker House for the Rooms, the House, and the Location.

1. The Rooms Hug You

Whether you stay in one of our small rooms or 2-room suites, you immediately feel at home. There’s the natural warmth of real Black Walnut Wood – in the floors, night tables, towel racks, and picture frames (all handcrafted in our workshop). The soft light comes from the wall lamps or through the sheer curtains on the windows. And you can control your environment, too, with a room thermostat for heat, window A/C for cooling, blackout shade for privacy, and lack of a TV for undisturbed rest.   But what greets your eyes first will be the quilt bed covering – all earth tones – and the wall art by local artists rendering local scenes. Still, the feel of the room must measure up to the comfort of the bed. We use a slat system that pushes the mattress against the contours of your body for a supported and deeply restful sleep. A guest told us recently, “I frequently suffer from bouts of insomnia, but not here. I slept last night for 7 straight hours.” Now that’s a room -and bed- that hugs you.

2 . The House Entertains You

Almost 200 years and 15,000 + sq. ft. – that’s a lot of Walker House history and space to explore. The House contains 42 rooms, and you should open the door to as many as possible. You’ll find not only stunning Black Walnut floors and furniture but over 100 artworks of local and regional scenes (how many places can you identify?) When you browse the hallways, you’ll find hundreds of Nobel Prize books to stimulate your imagination. Want to play a game? You can choose from dozens of board and card games in Room 12, or peek into Room 11 to try to identify the 11 items embedded in the large stone walls (find all of them and win a Chocolate Shoppe Old Fashioned Vanilla ice cream cone). Go to the other end of the 2nd floor and check out the Banquet Room, which contains the world’s only walking labyrinth in a commercial dining room. When you head to the 1st floor you must visit the Pub, a virtual classroom unto itself. There are miners’ caves (The Big Cave marks the spot where Mineral Point began), a 10-foot table in the shape and color of a Cornish Pasty, the art of Lavern Kammerude (the stunning depiction of early 20th century American farm life), a show-and-tell of wall coverings utilized on Walker House walls over the past 2 centuries, an active wood burning fireplace, horse brasses used as amulets and collectibles in Cornwall, official tartan material from Cornwall, and much more. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to look for ancient fossils embedded in the stone walls or to walk through the lush gardens in front and back of the House. At the end of the day, you’ll want to relax in front of an outdoor campfire  (we have 2 chimineas) and converse about the ghosts supposedly inhabiting the Walker House. We haven’t seen any ghosts, but you might entice one to float by the campfire and enjoy a s’more with you.

Example of Walker House ghost humor:

Question: Are there ghosts in the Walker House?

Answer: ”Yes, in fact one of them just asked me whether he should vote for Lincoln or Douglas.

3. The Location Thrills You

The Walker House could be your hub for weeks of activities – reached by foot or by vehicle.

By Foot. Want to be active? Walk the banks (or listen to the bubbling waters) of Brewery Creek that flow through the House grounds, or hike down the 47-mile Cheese Country Trail (begins across the street) or Christmas Mine Hill. If you want to work up a sweat, you can try swimming in the Olympic-size city pool or play tennis on courts with night lights. Of course, you can bike along country roads and enjoy the best scenery in the Midwest, the rolling hills and the farmland vistas of the Driftless Region (the flattening glaciers eons ago missed this area).

You don’t want to sweat so much? No problem. You can browse through the 20 art galleries/craft shops on Commerce and High Streets, or stroll through the 2.5-acre campus of the nationally known Shake Rag Center for the Arts. A bit farther down the road is Pendarvis, a Wisconsin Historic site, featuring 19th century miners’ homes.

Hungry? You’ve got plenty of choices. Start with fresh cheese curds or Blue Ribbon cheeses at Hook’s, or get a full meal across the street from the Walker House at Tony’s (best burgers and fish fry), Popolo (superb Italian), or the Brewpub (traditional American). High Street also features restaurants – Tequila Point (southwestern fare), Midway (best pizza), Red Rooster (Cornish specialties), and Grey Dog Deli (gourmet sandwiches/wraps).

By Vehicle. Between Dubuque, Iowa (and the Mississippi) in the West (40 miles) and Madison in the East (52 miles), you can find just about any attraction. Five State Parks. Two gambling casinos. One National Natural Landmark – Cave of the Mounds. Breweries and Wineries. Classical theater with American Players’ Theater. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin. The eclectic showcase House on the Rock. Even a retreat/program center at Sinsinawa run by the Dominican Sisters. Oh, by the way, your vehicle is “by the door” with free parking in front of the House.
